Before You Finish the First Draft

While drafting, it can help to keep a low-pressure journal about your progress – what feels exciting, what feels sticky, and what questions you want to come back to later. Use simple placeholders for names, places, or occupations so you can stay in the flow instead of stopping to research mid-scene.

Step Away, Then Revisit Your Vision

Once you type “The End,” set the draft aside for a bit to reset your brain. Even a short break helps you return with fresher eyes. When you’re ready, pull out your story vision – what you hoped this book would be – and reread that before you reread the manuscript, so you’re anchored in your original goals.

Read Without Editing (Yet)

On your first pass back through, read the entire draft without making changes; instead, jot quick notes about what’s working, what feels confusing, and what you’re proud of. This separates your “reader brain” from your “editor brain” and keeps you from getting lost in polishing sentences that might later be cut.

Track Your Scenes and Structure

Next, create a simple scene-by-scene or chapter-by-chapter map. For each section, note things like point of view, key story event, character goal and motivation, conflict, turning point, new decision, scene purpose, polarity shift (better/worse), day and time, and setting. This big-picture snapshot helps you see pacing, repetition, missing steps, and where cause and effect or tension might be dropping.

Brainstorm Changes and Deepen Characters

Using your notes and scene map, brainstorm possible changes before you touch the draft – additions, cuts, moved scenes, or new beats that would strengthen the story. Update your character profiles with what you learned while drafting: motivations, wounds, core fears, and how they grow or shift from page one to the end so their arcs feel intentional, not accidental.
