A Supportive First Step for Authors
My former manuscript evaluations are now Story Consultations, and I made this change to better reflect the kind of support I want to offer authors, especially new and debut writers who may feel a little hesitant about reaching out for editorial help.
A Story Consultation is designed to be a reassuring, practical first step. Instead of feeling like you have to be fully ready for a deep edit, you can begin with thoughtful feedback, a clearer sense of direction, and a better understanding of what your manuscript needs next. My goal is to help you feel supported, not overwhelmed.
Why the Name Changed
After my latest mastermind meeting with fellow editors I learned from a colleague about a different way to approach what I had been offering as manuscript evaluations. I wanted this service to feel more approachable. The phrase manuscript evaluation can sound formal or intimidating, especially if you are new to the editing process. Story Consultation feels warmer and more conversational, while still clearly communicating that this is a professional editorial service. This matches my editing and business philosophy, so the change is exciting!
This rebrand is not about changing the quality of the feedback. It is about making the experience better reflect the experience that should feel welcoming and easier to navigate for authors who want guidance without pressure.
Why I Do Not Offer Sample Edits
I do not offer sample edits. I need to understand the full manuscript in order to give you feedback that is useful, accurate, and grounded in the bigger picture of your story.
A single sample can miss important patterns in character development, pacing, structure, and narrative flow. Reading the full project allows me to see how everything works together so I can give you meaningful advice that actually helps you move forward.
What You Will Receive
Your Story Consultation will provide specific, actionable feedback that you can use as you revise. I’ll look at the overall story and offer guidance on areas such as:
Character development
Plot
Structure
Pacing
Dialogue
Narrative flow
Mechanical items
You’ll also receive direction on your next editing steps, whether that means revising on your own, moving into developmental editing or copyediting, or taking a different path based on your manuscript’s needs.
How the Credit Works
If we decide to continue working together after your consultation, the cost of the Story Consultation will be credited toward your next editing step. I want this service to feel like a helpful beginning, not a separate expense you have to worry about losing.
That way, you can get the guidance you need now while also investing in the next phase of your book with more confidence.
Pricing
Story Consultations are offered at a flat rate:
Novellas under 50,000 words: $200
Novels at 50,001 words and up: $400
